Every now and then, I look at this page and realize there are a whole lot of new folks hanging around.
First, welcome.
Second, you should probably know that what you’re about to see around here isn’t exactly normal.
Most homesteads have gardens.
We have gardens, chickens, pineapples, medicinal plants, fruit trees, a 120-pound Rottweiler supervisor, and an unhealthy habit of naming everything.
What started as a few herbs growing in the backyard has somehow turned into the little urban homestead we call 1737.
And honestly? We didn’t see any of this coming.
Jordan and I started this journey because we wanted a healthier lifestyle. We wanted to know where our food came from. We wanted to grow some of it ourselves.
Simple enough, right?
Well, that’s how it starts.
One herb becomes ten.
One garden bed becomes three.
A couple of chickens somehow turn into a flock.
Before you know it, you’ve got fruit trees arriving at the house, and you’re trying to figure out where you’re going to plant them.
Then, somewhere along the way, the homestead develops its own personality.
The chickens live at Shady Pines Retirement Home.
The younger flock hangs out in The Lanai until they’re old enough to move into the big coop.
Our pineapple patch became Bikini Bottom because our oldest son loves SpongeBob.
And our supervisor, Samson, keeps an eye on everything from his favorite shady spot in the yard. At least when he’s not sleeping through his shift.
The funny thing is that all these names started as jokes.
Now they’re part of the story.
Because 1737 isn’t just a place where we grow food.
It’s a place where memories are growing right alongside the vegetables.
It’s where we celebrate first harvests and learn from failures.
It’s where we teach classes, welcome visitors, and share what we’re learning along the way.
It’s where complete strangers show up for a tour and leave feeling like family.
And that’s really what 1737 has always been about.
Not perfection.
Not having the biggest garden.
Not growing the most food.
Community.
Whether you’re here for the chickens, the pineapples, the medicinal herbs, the food forest, or because you accidentally clicked on one of our posts and decided to stay awhile, we’re glad you’re here.
Pull up a chair.
Take a look around.
There’s always room for one more at The Garden Table.
Because here at 1737, we’re doing more than growing food.
We’re cultivating community and harvesting home.
