The View From the Porch

The Breeze Won’t Wait

I was supposed to be cleaning my office.

That is how this story should probably begin. 😂

Somehow, though, I ended up sitting on the deck with my laptop, working on a few workbooks and looking out over the homestead.

Jordan was in the garden trimming basil.

Samson was stretched out on the deck, keeping a very close eye on him because apparently no gardening task at 1737 can be completed without proper Rottweiler supervision.

And me?

I was working.

Technically.

But every few minutes, I found myself looking up.

At the garden.

At Jordan.

At Samson.

At everything growing out there.

And I thought…

I love it here.

Not because it’s perfect.

If you look closely enough, you’ll always find something that needs pruning, planting, harvesting, watering, cleaning, fixing or moving around here.

There’s always work to do.

But somewhere along the way, this little piece of ground became more than the place where we grow food.

It became home.

Maybe This Is What We Were Growing All Along

When we started 1737, I don’t think either of us completely understood what it would become.

We planted things.

Then we planted more things.

We added chickens.

Then somehow there were more chickens. 😂

Jordan kept finding new things he wanted to grow.

I kept finding new stories I wanted to tell.

People started coming through the gate.

Some came to learn.

Some came to visit.

Some came as strangers and left feeling a little more like family.

And somewhere in the middle of all of that, we created a life here.

Today wasn’t an event.

There wasn’t a class happening.

Nobody was touring the garden.

There wasn’t anything particularly exciting going on.

It was just Jordan trimming basil.

Samson supervising.

Me sitting on the deck working.

And a breeze moving through the garden.

But maybe that’s exactly why I wanted to remember it.

The Breeze Won’t Wait

I said something today about needing to get back inside and clean the office.

Then I looked around and thought…

The office will still be there.

The workbooks will still be there.

There will always be another email to answer, another page to finish and another thing on the to-do list.

But this particular breeze?

This exact Saturday morning?

Jordan standing in this particular spot trimming basil while Samson watches him?

That won’t wait.

And I don’t want to become so busy building our dreams that I forget to live inside the ones that already came true.

So I stayed on the deck a little longer.

I worked a little.

Watched a little.

Breathed a little.

And felt incredibly grateful for this wonderfully overgrown, chicken-filled, basil-scented little corner of the world we get to call ours.

The office eventually got its turn.

But first…

I enjoyed home.

Because the breeze absolutely won’t wait.

From our porch to yours,
Shawana
