One thing about Jordan, if he grows it, he’s eventually going to find a way to cook it.
And honestly, I’m not complaining.
This week, one of the pumpkins we grew right here at 1737 Urban Homestead made its way from the garden to the kitchen. Jordan decided he was going to make a pumpkin pie from scratch, and y’all, I wasn’t prepared for how good it was going to be.
There’s something almost magical about watching food complete the journey.
Months ago, that pumpkin was just a seed tucked into the soil. It endured rain, heat, and everything else Louisiana decided to throw at it. We watered it, checked on it, and celebrated when it finally ripened.
And then Jordan looked at it and said, “I think I’m making a pie.”
Now, I’ve learned over the years not to question these things. I just let him do what he does.
Before long, the kitchen smelled like cinnamon, nutmeg, and all the things that make a house feel like home. The pumpkin was roasted, pureed, seasoned, and transformed into the prettiest homemade pumpkin pie.
And let me tell you…
Store-bought pumpkin pie has entered the chat and realized it could never compete.
Was it perfect?
Probably not.
Did we care?
Absolutely not.
Because perfection isn’t really the goal around here.
Moments are.
Moments like standing in the garden and remembering where that pie started.
Moments like sneaking a taste before it completely cooled.
Moments like sitting around the table with family and enjoying something that literally grew in our backyard.
Those are the things that make all the weeding, watering, and waiting worth it.
People often ask why we homestead.
This right here is why.
Not because we expect to become completely self-sufficient.
Not because everything always goes according to plan.
But, because there’s something beautiful about planting seeds and watching them become memories.
And apparently, those memories taste a whole lot like pumpkin pie.
Some families have secret recipes.
Some families pass down traditions.
Here at 1737, we’re creating both, one harvest at a time.
And this week, our little pumpkin patch reminded us that some of life’s sweetest blessings come with a flaky crust and a dollop of whipped cream.
Cultivating Community. Harvesting Home. 🧡🥧🎃

“From patch to pie, this little pumpkin sure came a long way. And judging by the empty pie plate, I’d say it was worth every step.” 🧡🎃🥧
