There are some meals that fill your stomach, and then there are meals that fill your soul.
Juneteenth has always been about gathering. It’s about family, community, remembering where we’ve come from, and celebrating the freedom and resilience of those who came before us.
And around here, celebrations usually happen around the table.
This year’s Juneteenth Harvest Plate is simple, comforting, and full of the flavors that remind us of home. Nothing fancy. Just good food, good company, and gratitude for the blessings we’ve been given.
🍗 Main Dish
Grilled Chicken and Smoked Sausage
Because every good gathering starts with something sizzling on the grill.
Whether you’re team chicken, team sausage, or a little bit of both, there’s always room on the plate for something savory and satisfying.
🥬 Garden Fresh Greens
No Southern celebration would be complete without a pot of greens.
Slow-cooked and seasoned with love, collard greens have long been a staple on family tables and a reminder that some traditions are worth holding onto. Around here, they aren’t just a side dish—they’re part of the story.
Whether they’re harvested from the garden, picked up from the farmers market, or lovingly prepared from the grocery store, a bowl of greens has a way of bringing everyone to the table.
Because some things just belong together.
Family.
Faith.
Good food.
And greens.
🍠 Candied Sweet Potatoes
Sweet, buttery, and impossible to eat just one serving.
For many families, sweet potatoes are more than just food. They’re memories. They’re holiday dinners, Sunday gatherings, and recipes passed down from generation to generation.
🌽 Southern Skillet Cornbread
Golden, warm, and baked in cast iron.
Because no Southern table feels complete without cornbread.
And let’s be honest, everybody has an opinion on whether it should be sweet or not. Around here, we’re just happy if there’s enough for seconds.
🫛 Black-Eyed Peas
Simple, humble, and full of tradition.
Black-eyed peas have graced Southern tables for generations and are a reminder that some of the best meals come from simple ingredients prepared with love.
🍅 Fresh Garden Tomato and Cucumber Salad
Fresh tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, and herbs tossed together with a simple vinaigrette.
Proof that sometimes the best ingredients come straight from the garden.
🍓 Homemade Strawberry Lemonade
Red foods and drinks have long been associated with Juneteenth celebrations, symbolizing resilience, sacrifice, and joy.
Made with fresh strawberries and lemons, it’s the perfect way to cool off on a Louisiana summer day.
Ingredients
- 1 pound fresh strawberries
- 4–5 lemons, juiced
- 1 cup sugar or local honey
- 6 cups cold water
- Ice
- Fresh mint (optional)
Directions
- Blend the strawberries until smooth.
- Strain if desired.
- Add lemon juice, sugar or honey, and water.
- Stir until everything is combined.
- Serve over ice and garnish with fresh mint.
🍑 Peach Cobbler
Because every celebration deserves something sweet.
Warm peaches tucked beneath a golden crust have a way of bringing smiles and making everyone ask the same question:
“Is there any cobbler left?”
More Than a Meal
Juneteenth is about freedom.
It’s about remembering.
It’s about celebrating.
And it’s about gathering around the table with the people we love.
Whether your meal comes from your backyard garden, the farmers market, or the grocery store, may your table be full, your hearts be grateful, and your legacy continue to grow.
Because our ancestors planted more than crops.
They planted resilience, community, and hope.
And every seed we sow today is a way of honoring that legacy.
And if you’re gathering around the table this Juneteenth, don’t forget the greens.
Trust me.
Grandma would want it that way. ❤️💛💚🖤🥬
Happy Juneteenth from our family to yours.
