A Taste of Bikini Bottom

Around here, every part of the homestead seems to end up with a nickname. Some make perfect sense, and some only make sense to us. But that’s part of what makes this place feel like home.

Our pineapple patch is affectionately known as Bikini Bottom.

Why? Because our oldest son loves SpongeBob SquarePants, and honestly, once the name was suggested, it stuck. Now whenever we’re checking on the pineapples, watering them, or admiring their growth, we’re headed to Bikini Bottom.

Today, Bikini Bottom delivered.

One of our Sugarloaf pineapples was finally ripe and ready to eat, and it was everything we hoped it would be. Sweet. Juicy. Flavorful. The kind of fruit that makes you pause after the first bite and appreciate what you’re eating.

If you’ve never had a Sugarloaf pineapple, they’re known for their incredible sweetness and lower acidity. They’re smooth, refreshing, and packed with flavor. And when they’re grown right in your own backyard? They’re even better.

As Jordan cut into the pineapple, the juice immediately began to flow. The aroma alone told us we were in for a treat. One bite confirmed it.

It was absolutely delicious.

Moments like this remind me that homesteading isn’t just about growing food. It’s about creating memories. It’s about the stories attached to the plants, the animals, and the spaces we create.

Years from now, I may not remember exactly how many pineapples we harvested this season. But I’ll remember standing in the kitchen, eating a perfectly ripe Sugarloaf pineapple from Bikini Bottom, and smiling because of a cartoon-loving kid who inspired the name.

Homesteading has given us fresh food, but it’s also given us something even more valuable: stories we’ll tell for years to come.

Some families have orchards.

Some families have traditions.

Here at 1737, we have Bikini Bottom.

And today, Bikini Bottom gave us the sweetest reminder that good things are worth waiting for.

Cultivating Community. Harvesting Home. 🍍
