There’s something we say often around here at 1737:
Know where your food comes from.
But if we’re being truthful, knowing where your food comes from means understanding more than where it was grown or raised. Sometimes it means being willing to learn about the parts of the process that happen long before food reaches a grocery store shelf.
And yes… sometimes that means processing a chicken.
On Saturday, October 17 at 3:00 PM, Jordan will be hosting another Chicken Processing Class here at 1737 Urban Homestead.
This class is for anyone who has ever considered raising chickens for meat, wants to become a little more self-reliant, or simply wants a better understanding of what it actually takes to get food from the homestead to the table.
This Isn’t Just About Processing a Chicken
There is a tremendous amount of respect that comes with raising your own food.
When you have cared for an animal, fed it, provided clean water and shelter, watched it grow, and ultimately depend on it to feed your family, processing isn’t something we believe should be treated casually.
It’s part of the responsibility.
Jordan will walk participants through the process step by step, including humane handling, plucking, evisceration and cleaning, cooling and storage, and preparing the chicken to take home.
You’ll also learn about the equipment used, cleanliness and food safety, and ways to make the most of the bird while reducing unnecessary waste.
And you don’t have to be ready to do it yourself to come learn.
Choose How You Want to Participate
For those ready to get their hands dirty, and we mean that quite literally this time 😂, the Hands-On Experience is $25.
You’ll participate in the processing yourself, with Jordan there to guide you through each step. The chicken you process is yours to take home.
Maybe you’re curious but not quite ready for all that.
We understand. 😂
The Demonstration-Only option is $10. You can watch the entire process, ask questions, learn, and decide whether processing your own birds is something you might want to tackle in the future.
Demonstration participants who would like to take home a processed chicken may purchase one for $8.
Why We Teach This
1737 has never been about convincing everybody that they need to grow everything they eat.
That’s not realistic for everybody.
What we do believe is that knowledge matters.
Maybe you’ll leave this class ready to raise meat birds.
Maybe you’ll decide processing chickens yourself is absolutely, positively NOT your ministry. 😂
That’s okay too.
But you’ll leave knowing a little more about what it takes to put food on a family’s table. You’ll understand the work behind something most of us have spent our entire lives purchasing already cleaned, packaged, and ready to cook.
And there’s value in that.
Because every new skill gives us another opportunity to depend a little less on systems we don’t control and a little more on ourselves, our neighbors, and our communities.
That’s what we’re cultivating here.
Not just gardens.
Knowledge. Skills. Confidence. Community.
