Listen… I know, as homesteaders, we’re supposed to love all the plants equally. We nurture them, water them, cheer them on, and act like we don’t have favorites.
But let me go ahead and tell the truth today.
The Blue Christmas Pepper has been out here, making it real hard not to play favorites.
Because first of all… it’s purple. Not “kind of purple.” Not “purple-ish if the light hits it right.” Nope. We’re talking actual, beautiful, rich purple. And if you know me, you already know my favorite color is purple, so this pepper walked into the garden already winning points.
The first time I saw those deep purple peppers hanging on the plant, I had one of those little homestead moments where I just stood there smiling. Because sometimes gardening still catches me off guard. You plant a tiny seed, and months later, you’re standing in your backyard looking at something that almost doesn’t seem real.
And can we talk about the name for a second?
Blue Christmas Pepper.
Who named this thing? Because honestly… they understood the assignment.
It sounds festive. Fancy. Like it should arrive wearing a velvet cape and carrying tiny ornaments. The name alone gives Hallmark movie energy.
But beyond being pretty, this pepper is actually putting in work too.
Blue Christmas peppers start off with that gorgeous purple color and eventually shift through shades of cream, orange, and red as they mature. So this one plant ends up looking like somebody decorated it for the holidays. Nature really said, let me show off for a minute.
And y’all know I love plants that pull double duty. Give me something useful and pretty. Feed me and decorate my garden at the same time.
Those are my people.
Well… my peppers.
One of my favorite things about gardening is finding those little surprises—plants that make you stop and appreciate how creative nature can be. Between the blackberries, the fruit trees, the chickens causing chaos at Shady Pines, and now these gorgeous purple peppers, the homestead always seems to find a way to remind me why I love this life.
So yes… I may be showing favoritism.
Don’t tell the other peppers.
They don’t need that kind of negativity.
Until next time…
Keep cultivating community and harvesting home. 💜🌱
