Lanai Drama: Baby Hens and Their Reflection Obsession

Listen… things are getting a little spicy in the lanai.

That’s the current headquarters for our newest batch of baby hens—six tiny fluffballs about two weeks old, still growing into their legs, feathers, and attitudes. They’re cute, yes… but also dramatic.

At this point, the Lanai might as well be a reality show set. We’ve got pushing, shoving, side-eyes, and what I swear looked like a chicken trying to cut the line at the feeder. It’s giving “coop confessional.”

Now, before y’all get worried, everyone is fine. They’re just working out the pecking order like all young chickens do. The Lanai is their temporary home. They will stay there until they’re big enough to join the main coop with the big girls. It’s been… interesting.

In an effort to keep the peace (and let’s be honest, entertain ourselves), we decided to introduce a mirror.

Y’all. A mirror.

And that’s when the chaos turned comical.

Apparently, chickens love looking at themselves. I don’t know if they think it’s a new friend or just can’t get enough of their own fluffy fabulousness, but ever since we put it in, it’s been like a TikTok glam booth in there. One minute, they’re staring longingly. Next, they’re trying to peck their own reflection. I caught one of them puffing up like, “Who does she think she is?!”

We’re calling it the Lanai Lookbook.

It’s become the new hotspot. Who needs toys when you’ve got your own reflection to obsess over?

So if you’re wondering how things are going over here at 1737 Urban Homestead, just know we’ve got baby hens discovering self-love, working through sisterhood squabbles, and preparing for their big move into the big coop like they’re heading off to college.

We’ll keep y’all posted on the lanai drama and the glow-ups that are sure to come. Because if there’s one thing we do well around here, it’s raising chickens and making it fun.

Stay tuned. Stay feathered. And remember, confidence is key, even if you’re just two weeks old and covered in fluff.
