Around here at 1737 Urban Homestead, things just wouldn’t be the same without our four fluffy, fabulous girls clucking around like they own the place. These aren’t just any hens—these are Buff Orpingtons, and yes, they are named after The Golden Girls. Because let’s be real, what’s a backyard flock without a little personality?
Let me introduce you to the crew living in our coop—affectionately known as Shady Pines (you already know).
Meet the Girls:
- Dorothy: The tall, stoic leader of the group. She’s the one who gives you that look like she knows more than you, and probably does.
- Blanche: Our drama queen. Always fluffing her feathers and strutting her stuff like she’s headed to a rooftop cocktail party.
- Rose: Sweet, gentle, and just a little bit clueless. She’ll walk right past the snacks to follow a butterfly.
- Sophia: The tiniest but mightiest. If someone’s gonna escape the run or chase a squirrel? It’s Sophia.
So, Why Buff Orpingtons?
These girls aren’t just cute—they’re practical homestead gold. Buff Orpingtons are a heritage breed known for being friendly, calm, and great layers. They’re excellent for families or small farms like ours because they’re super social (which means we can hang out with them), and they don’t mind being handled.
They lay beautiful light brown eggs and keep it consistent, especially in spring and summer. Plus, they’re cold- and heat-tolerant, which is important in this wild New Orleans weather. We chose Buffs because we wanted chickens that are just as much pets as they are producers and they’ve lived up to the hype.
A Feathered Legacy
We talk a lot around here about growing your own food, knowing where your meals come from, and reconnecting with the land. But our girls remind us of something else just as important—joy. Watching them scratch around, chase bugs, or settle down together on a warm day brings a kind of peace that’s hard to explain. They’ve become part of our rhythm out here, part of the story we’re building at 1737.
So next time you crack open one of our farm-fresh eggs or hear a cheerful bawk in the background of one of our videos, just know—somewhere in Shady Pines, Dorothy, Blanche, Rose, or Sophia is living her best chicken life.
